The last month was busy as hell. Found a new apartment, which means you need to move all the "meuk" (crap) you have. Fix some small problems in the new apartment (still working on that). Buy new stuff, be nice to my new house mate (Bart) and loads more.
There is a lot of working @ 1020concepts in the pipe-line. Really happy that things are picking up since I came back from my world trip.

- MetrixLab, updating the back-end and small changes
There is a lot more, post them real soon. This means I didn't found the time to design and update this blog or work on any of the other brilliant idea's I have. Still want to fix something for Browser fonts a overview of free css @font-face fonts, make a tribute to Jeffery Zeldman's famous quote; "To hell with bad browsers". Make a HTML5 boilerplate for Mobile like HTML5-Boilerplate by Paul Irish degrading or visa-versa.
Loads of stuff, but first things first, time to work some more
Google Analytics & Google Webmaster tools: Verification

If you want to verify your website in Google webmaster tools via Google Analytics it's good to know that you should put the Analytics snippet in the <head> of your website. I normally put most of my code before the </body>, but that doesn't seem to work, as Google Webmaster doesn't find the snippet And be sure to use the updated async Analystics snippet.
Matthijs van Roon, navigation update (fancybox + jcarousel = inline)

For a new client of my, Matthijs van Roon, an Amsterdam based commercial photographer, I did an update on his website navigation. Before he loaded the every image on a new page. He wanted them to load without a page refresh.
The new navigation is a combination of Fancybox and jCarousel. The photos are loaded inside the page without a refresh, no AJAX as fancybox use image preloader and doesn't use a http request. Normaly fancybox uses an overlay to present the the photo's. I changed the javascript so I could append the photo's to an element inside the website. Cleared all the extra markup for title's, overlay and shadows.
At the bottom of every portfolio page there was a carousel with all the images presented in a category. This should move when a new image is loaded. I used jCarousel and implented it inside the code of fancybox. Now I can connect a group of images to an list and mark the list to be a carousel. On selecting a image in the list, the image loads and the carsousel moves the image to the front of the carousel.

Ondertussen zit ik al weer een week of langer in India, ik heb het niet echt door hoe snel de dagen gaan en wat voor dag het vandaag is of de datum of de tijd. Dus het reizen begint al te wennen. Maar voor dat ik jullie een update geef van India hebben jullie nog een aantal foto's te goed van Zuid-Afrika, de laatste paar dagen, kerst, oud & nieuw etc. Het lijkt al weer maanden geleden met alles impressies hier...
Mijn nieuwjaars duik, net even wat anders

In Nederland spring je in ijskoud water als nieuwjaars duik. Hier springen alleen de gekleurde in het water, al is dat niet ijskoud, of iets minder. De Atlantische oceaan is ook niet echt warm. Ik heb eerlijk gezegd nog nooit een nieuwjaars duik gedaan en ben ook niet van plan om dat te gaan doen de komenden jaren. Al weet je nooit wat er op je pad komt. Dus het leek mij en Ray een leuk idee om het begin van het nieuwe jaar is anders aan te pakken. We zijn 2 Januari vertrokken richting het Oosten over de N2. Ongeveer de zelfde richting als de vorige road-trip. Dit keer alleen met een totaal ander doel. Een nieuwjaars duik van een brug, een hele hoge bur, met een elastiekje rond je enkels.

Maand drie in Zuid-Afrika is al gestart en mijn laatste blog post is zo goed als een maand oud. Tijd voor een nieuwe post want er is ondertussen veel gebeurd. Sinterklaas is langs geweest, Michal is langs geweest, we hebben een roadtrip gemaakt, de politie is langs geweest, kerst staat voor de deur en Peet en Sasha zijn terug naar huis. Genoeg te vertellen dus en ondertussen ook nog een beetje werken.

Het is weer tijd voor een kleine update vanuit het OVER zonnige Kaapstad. Al bijna 2 weken boven de 25 graden overdag. Dat betekend dus "Full Matal Jacket: Hydrate and Dehydrate". Stukje fietsen, hoppa 2 liter water biertjes drinken, stukje wandelen de berg op, hoppa 1,5 water drinken. Stukje met de auto rijden, hoppa koffie drinken. Duik in het zwembad, hoppa 3 biertjes drinken. Jullie snappen wel wat ik bedoel. Maar als het echt warm is, dan liggen we op het strand of op bij het zwembad overdag en s'avonds doen we niks, het is net vakantie!

Vorige week zijn we op een kleine trip gegaan langs de West Coast. We zijn langs en door prachtige natuur gegaan en hebben bijzonder mooie dingen gezien. Wat een prachtig land is het. Goed om even de stad uit te gaan en tot rust te komen in dit soort omgevingen. We hebben voor 70E per nacht een prachtig huisje gehuurd in Paternoster en voor het eerst onze eigen braai gemaakt. Hout tot kool stoken en dan de spareribs en worst er op roosteren als echte Zuid-Afrikanen.

In de vorige post ben ik niet echt ingegaan op wat we tot nu toe allemaal gedaan hebben, behalve naar een auto zoeken dan. Maar dat ga ik helemaal goed maken met deze post, want we doen hier best veel? Waar zal ik beginnen? De afgelopen 4 weken hebben vooral Cape-Town verkend, aangezien we nog geen auto hadden hebben we ons behoorlijk de pl***is gelopen en de t***ng gefietst, of ik dan.

Week 5 van Kaapstad gaat al weer van start, het gaat snel. De afgelopen 2 weken zijn dan ook voorbij gevlogen. Ik ben al een stuk wijzer geworden hoe het hier allemaal werkt maar het blijft een vreemde omgeving. Iedereen groeit hier op met angst, wat een beetje paranoïde uitwerking heeft. Overdag merk je er niet veel van, uitgezonderd dat er weinig mensen op staat lopen in de woon wijken. In de stad is het gezellig druk. s'Nachts is er niemand op straat, behalve bij de uitgaansgelegenheden. Iedereen doet hier zo'n beetje alles met de auto, zelfs de kunstacademie studenten hebben hier een auto om het verschil even aan te geven. Fietsen is niet cool of te gevaarlijk denk ik. De verhalen van iedereen zijn verwarrend, het ene moment vertellen ze dat alles hier prima is en er leuke dingen te doen zijn. Het andere moment vertellen ze dat ze niemand kennen waarbij niet is ingebroken of die niet is een keer is beroofd. Het constant op je hoede zijn is vermoeiend. Je mist de vrijheid die je gewendt bent in NL. Dronken vanuit de kroeg naar huis lopen of fietsen is er niet bij. Dat fietsen komt vooral door de heuvels, dronken de heuvels op trappen, ik heb er nuchter al genoeg uitdaging aan. Dus je pakt een taxi onderhandelt even over de prijs en stapt in. Je bent voor ongeveer 30 Rand thuis, wat omgerekend een €2.50 is. Jammer genoeg is het inet niet zo goedkoop

First mondays

De eerste maandag bij iets nieuws is altijd spannend en een beetje onwennig. Maar deze eerste maandag was helemaal top. Nadat het 2 dagen snoeihard heeft gewaaid, werd ik voor het eerst in een hele langtijd voor 9u uit mijzelf wakker ondanks heftige dromen. Het zonnetje scheen en ik voelde mij uitgerust, wat heerlijk wakker worden.

Goiemôre allemaal, we zijn compleet. Gisteren avond zijn Sasha en Raymond aangekomen in Cape Town. Samen met Peter in da auto, hebben we ze opgehaald van het vliegveld. Dat was wel even spannend met Peter achter het stuur (wat rechts zit), want ze rijden hier aan de verkeerd kant van de weg. Peter wilde perse op tijd komen en was redelijk zenuwachtig om zijn meisje weer te zien. Hij scheurde als een malloot over de snelweg.... en ik zat met dicht geknepen billetjes naast hem.

Exam Presentation Video Online

Yesterday, July 16 I finally signed my certificate and I'm officially Bachelor in Communication & Multimedia Design. To get this I needed to do an exam presentation. And of course as a media boy I had it filmed. You can watch the movie on my graduation blog: http://brisdom.com/afstuderen/.
The next few months I will be working for my own company 1020concepts, to earn money for 3/4 round the world trip. End of October I hope to start, beginning in South-Africa, Cape Town and after spending New Years Eve there I will get a plain to Mumbai, India and travel trough Asia. When somewhere in May/June I hope to be in Australia and finally get to New-Zealand. If anybody has connections there, please don't hesitate to send me an email as I would like to meet people with the same interests while I'm traveling. So keep following my blog for all the adventures I'll be having. I hope that before I move this blog has had a nice update :D

URL specifications for mobile websites

Mobile websites are getting more and more interesting. I'm trying to create a clear view for me and my clients on how to approach this upcoming market. So while surfing the web on my desktop and creating small mobile websites I was wondering what would be the best way to direct a user to your mobile website. A subdomain or a extra extension, like .mobi. Automatic redirection, a link to your mobile website. No redirections or anything at all, only different stylesheets depending on screen-size or user-agent.
There are a few options if you optimize your website for mobile devices when it comes to url specifications.
- a domain specific site. sitename.mobi This is a common solution if you are mainly focused on mobile users. But should you visit it on a desktop, should it be desktop optimized?
- a subdomain mobi.sitename.com, there a many variations on the subdomain, the most common is m. others i've seen are mmm. mobile. mob.
- a request url such as sitename.com/m/ and again with very different requests as m / mobile / mob etc.
- a plain domain sitename.com, most of the time you will find these load different stylesheets.
- all of the above, never missing anyone.
For all five, and there are probably more, there are pro's and con's. I was wondering if there is a w3c standard for domain specifications if you are creating a mobile version of your website. There is nothing i could find that is directed towards mobile specifications. Only the following 2 comments:
- [URIS] Keep the URIs of site entry points short.
"5.2.1.1 What it means: Typing URIs on mobile devices can be difficult, and it is expected that users will prefer to use alternative methods of obtaining URIs when available - such as following a hyperlink (from an e-mail, SMS or other Web page), WAP Push, 2D bar code, color bar code, RFID tag and Bluetooth. However, typing a URI may in some cases be the only option available. By keeping site entry point URIs short it is possible to reduce the chance of error and provide a more satisfactory user experience."
[URIS - http://www.w3.org/TR/mobile-bp/#URIS] - a quote saying that domain URI's shouldn't have aliases if they are presenting the same resources.
"A URI owner SHOULD NOT associate arbitrarily different URIs with the same resource." -from Architecture of the Word Wide Web, Volume One [ WEBARCH - http://www.w3.org/TR/2004/REC-webarch-20041215/#uri-aliases]

Via Dutchcowboys kwam ik op twittercharts weer een twitter ding, je zou bijna denken dat je er iets mee kan, met al dat "getwitter". Maar wat duidelijk wordt is dat ik totaal ritmeloos twitter maar wel altijd tussen 3u en 8u lig te pitten, want dan twitter ik voor geen meter. Check mijn stats in de afbeelding. Je zou er bijna kunst van kunnen maken.

And once again it's a parking ticket machine that drives users nuts (see another one here). And this time to the extent that they've taken their fate into their own hands and added some 'customized' labels to the device. I think we can add parking ticket machines to the category of 'things that always suck', that also includes office telephones, and presentation equipment in meeting rooms. I do hope that the designers saw the 'modification' that users made, because it shows them that really anyone can make a better design than they did...
